Acne affects about 85 percent of the population at some time in their life and is the most common skin disease treated by dermatologists. It is a chronic disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands that is characterized by black heads, pimple outbreaks, cysts, infected abscesses, and (sometimes) scarring. If the blockage occurs deeper down, inflammation and primary bacterial infection combine to produce a much larger and angrier spot, which can spread when touched with dirty fingers. When the pimple becomes infected, a whitehead or pustule can develop. This is the type of blemish that can burst and may eventually scar. The biggest blemish of all is a cyst – the red, swollen result of a deeper infection. If you develop cysts, you should definitely seek the advice of a dermatologist. Studies have shown that the body produces more androgens when a person is under stress. The increase may trigger acne flare-ups by stimulating the sebaceous glands to pump out more sebum. Even physical stresses, such as colds, allergies, surgery, or menstruation can trigger break-outs.
