It has a low level of sebum and can be prone to sensitivity. The skin has a parched look caused by its inability to retain moisture. It is more likely to react adversely to harsh chemicals and will tend to make wrinkles look more prominent – although it won’t actually cause wrinkles. As people age their skin tends to get drier. Dry skin, in its severest forms are known as Dermatitis, Ichthyosis, or Eczema. All of those conditions should be seen by a dermatologist. Ironically, the main cause of dry skin does not seem to be lack of moisture. What is actually thought to be taking place is that the intracellular matrix (the substances between skin cells that keep them intact, smooth, and healthy) has become depleted or damaged, creating water loss. Follow the tips listed below to reduce damage to the skin’s matrix. Dry Skin Care Tips If you're like most people, your personal cleansing and bathing habits probably grew out of your childhood and teenage years. For most of us, that means frequent baths and showers, deodorant soaps, and a variety of facial cleansers. But if you have dry skin, those very habits and products may be one of the main reasons why your skin is in such bad shape. These habits can strip your skin of the scant amounts of moisture and oil that it has. Here are some dry skin care steps to take, which can restore moisture and suppleness to your skin. - Be sure to cleanse and tone twice daily with a Feierabend Cleanser and Toner. Always touch your face gently.
- In addition to applying a Feierabend Moisturizer after toning, reapply it whenever your skin starts feeling dry. - When rinsing, avoid the use of tap water on your face. The deposits are too drying on the skin. Never use hot water. Instead, rinse with tepid distilled water.
- Scale back showers or baths to at least every other day or less. In between, you can perform sponge baths on odor-causing parts of your body. Avoid soaking in the bathtub, Jacuzzi, or taking long showers. As wonderful as a leisurely bath or shower feels, too much water is bad for skin because it breaks down the skin’s protective covering (the skin’s intracellular matrix) destroying the substances that keep skin cells intact. Keep showers or baths as short as possible and do not use hot water.
- Use a humidifier. Low humidity is the cause of most weather-related dry skin, whether it is winter or a desert environment. Humidifiers are relatively inexpensive, last a long time, and work for the whole family. If you have a large home, you may need two or three humidifiers to gain benefit.
- Keep your house cool. Overheated houses are one of the main reasons dry skin seems to occur more often in the winter. The less hot air that circulates, the better chance you have of keeping some humidity in the air.
- Get some house plants. Plants perform much the same job as a humidifier, keeping more moisture in the air. Keep them watered and see what a difference they can make.
